CDOT Bike and Pedestrian Safety Study

Project Overview:

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is conducting a study to improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians in Clear Creek County and the neighboring areas that make up CDOT's Region 1. The study will include an evaluation of systemic and "hot spot" improvements on CDOT-owned roadways within Region 1. The primary goal of this project is to support future safety grant applications to implement projects.

Once problem areas are identified on the map, a CDOT team will work to develop engineering solutions to reduce bicycle and pedestrian related crashes. For each of the top prioritized locations, conceptual designs, planning level cost estimates, and benefit to cost ratios will be prepared to support future safety grant applications.

This input will help make sure that Clear Creek County's safety concerns get the attention that they need!

The input period for this study is now closed. Further study of the areas identified in the study will be occur through march, followed by identification of priority sites and potential safety countermeasures for each site.

Example of Bike and Pedestrian Safety Solutions:

Potential safety improvements could include:

  • Sidewalks
  • Striping
  • Intersection Geometry
  • Signalization
  • Traffic Calming Measures
  • Shoulder Widths
  • Lighting

Many roads within Clear Creek County, including much of County Road 308 in the Dumont-Lawson-Downieville area, are CDOT-maintained and are being considered by this study. Public participation in this study helps to inform CDOT of safety hazards within Clear Creek County and raises the likelihood that these areas will receive funding for future safety improvements.

How do I tell which roads are CDOT owned?

Once you follow the study link, the fourth step of the study is the opportunity to indicate where potential safety hazards occur on the digital map. On this map, all CDOT-owned roads will be indicated in blue on the map.

Many roads within Clear Creek County, including much of County Road 308  are CDOT-maintained and will be included in this study.

    Why does this study matter?

This study seeks to accomplish the following:

    • Improve bicycle & pedestrian safety in the region
    • Create process best practices for identifying future safety improvement needs and locations
    • Apply identified safety improvement solutions to City and County Roads within Region 1
    • Learn and understand the safety improvement needs and preferences for communities within Region 1
