Background

In 2015, Clear Creek County purchased Alvarado Open Space Park, with the goal of preserving essential wildlife habitat and historically significant land, while supporting basic outdoor recreational needs in and around our community.

The property was transformed from a private event venue and renamed as Alvarado Open Space Park, which opened to the community in 2019.

Alvarado Open Space Park has easy access for our residents and guests of the County to appreciate for a quiet stroll, dog walking, wildlife viewing, or enjoying the sounds of Clear Creek as it winds through the property. Featuring access to a lovely pond and Clear Creek, along with several walking trails, and in the future, the Clear Creek Greenway, Clear Creek County envisions this property being enjoyed for generations.

In 2022, the Open Space Commission invited input to launch further planning. The OSC published a survey and hosted an event on site. See the survey results here.

We need your help to complete the Alvarado Master Plan!

The OSC now knows that the community values this park as a hidden gem and wants it protected. it is a place to walk on level quiet trails among the cottonwoods and be near the creek and enjoy the sweet little pond. As the OSC prepares to take the next step with Alvarado, and plan the remaining transformation, we need more input. Clear Creek County and the Clear Creek County Open Space Commission are seeking public input on what people want to see at Alvarado Open Space Park. Please participate in this project however you can. Thank you!

Thank you to those of you who attended the in person Alvarado Master Plan event on 10/17/2024 at Alvarado Open Space Park.

Provide your Feedback on the Master Plan Goals and Vision!

GOALS: We have prepared a vision statement and various elements elaborating on the vision statement -- such as these Goals -- for the Alvarado Master Plan. Tell us what you think. Are the goals clear and cohesive? Do Preservation/Restoration, Pride and Identity, and defined Creek Access cover the most important things? Is anything missing?

I would support keeping it as a local recreation area without a lot of additions. It is a peaceful place to walk and enjoy what is good about our area. Getting away from the crowd is always beneficial. To turn it into a tourist attraction, or another ode to cyclists, would not be desirable.

Greetings,

I am a graduate student at the University of Colorado, Denver. I recently completed a building assessment of the old stone cabin with chimney that is located within Alvarado Park. It has quite an interesting story to tell, not only about historic masonry techniques but also early Colorado tourism and travel. I would hate to see it demolished. I have forwarded my report to Martha Tableman.

My capstone project is related to residential curatorship. There are a few existing programs on the East Coast. States or counties lease historic buildings to individuals, non-profits or for-profit businesses for no rent or low rent in return for the building's rehabilitation. Also, the curator must open the building to the public 3-4 times per year.

I would be interested in exploring a curatorship opportunity, if the county were open to such, for the old stone cabin.

Sincerely,
Mary Graff

Please leave the park as is as much as possible. I would like to see the buildings, bridges, and current trails restored but nothing more. The bicyclist have plenty of trails especially with the one that just opened in Idaho Springs and the others planned there. I would prefer to see Alvarado Park left wild.

I speak on behalf of the preservation of our cherished local pond. This serene body of water is not just a natural feature; it is a sanctuary for both wildlife and the community. It provides a habitat for diverse species, ensuring the balance of our local ecosystem. From the delicate trees that dance in the wind to the fish that call it home, this pond supports life in ways we may not always see but must always value.

For us, the community, this pond is a place of reflection, recreation, and connection. It is where friends gather, families bond, and individuals find peace amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. The preservation of this pond is crucial not only for the environment but also for our well-being and the social fabric of our community.

Let us not forget that once such natural treasures are lost, they are gone forever. We must act now to ensure that future generations can enjoy the same beauty and tranquility that we do today. I urge you all to consider the long-term benefits of preserving this pond. Let us be the stewards of our environment and protect this precious resource for the countless lives it touches.
In addition to the environmental and community benefits, it is important to consider the potential negative impact that increased tourism could have on our beloved pond. While tourism can bring economic benefits, it often comes at a significant cost to natural areas. Increased foot traffic and recreational activities can lead to pollution, habitat destruction, and disturbances to the wildlife that depend on this pond for survival.

Tourists, unfamiliar with the delicate balance of our local ecosystem, may inadvertently harm the very environment they come to enjoy. Litter, noise, and overuse of the area can degrade the natural beauty and ecological health of the pond. This not only affects the wildlife but also diminishes the experience for local residents who cherish this peaceful retreat.

By preserving the pond and limiting tourism, we ensure that it remains a pristine sanctuary for both wildlife and our community. We must prioritize the long-term health of our environment over short-term economic gains. Let us protect this precious resource from the potential harm of increased tourism and maintain it as a haven for all who truly appreciate its natural beauty.
